1901 MINTON SECESSIONIST WARE TANKARD - KING EDWARD VII 1901 MINTON’S SECESSIONIST WARE (1st PERIOD) TANKARD FOR THE ACCESSION TO THE THRONE OF KING EDWARD VII. A rarely available mug/tankard.
Leon Solon was hired by Minton's in 1895 after his work was published in The Studio an important design magazine. His early work at Minton's Staffordshire Factory was influenced by the Viennese Secessionist art movement, founded by Gustav Klimt and others and became known as Secessionist ware. Age crazing with resulting dscoloring mostly under the base. No chips, cracks or restoration ans is considered in good condition. See all pictures.

A very unusual tin box for the 1929 visit of the Prince of Wales (Later King Edward VIII) to the North East Coast Exhibition in Newcastle-upon Tyne. Good color graphic of the exhibition with inset of the prince in a top hat. Graphic with good minor scratches. Wear to the edges and inside. No dents and the lid fits well. See all pictures.

Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte (1808 – 1873) Elected President by popular vote in 1848, he initiated a coup d'état in 1851, before ascending the throne As Napoleon III in 1852 and ruled as Emperor of the French until 1870. He was the son of Napoleon I’s brother and liked to proclaim that he was his uncle’s nephew. There is a 1cm x 2cm chip (lower right front) which is not immediately obvious in the design. Otherwise in good condition with very light age crazing.

The back is marked by the makers D.R. McNicol,(Pottery Company) East Liverpool, Ohio. Calendar plates were a specialty of this company.
Excellent rim gilding, good color and light all over age crazing.

SIR DOUGLAS HAIG (FIELD MARSHALL HAIG) BRASS CASTING. - A good relief molded brass casting of Sir Douglas Haig. Rear stamped T Smith and the letter 'S'. Very good condition.
The Right Honorable Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig, 1861 - 1928 a British soldier and senior commander during World War I. He was commander of the British Expeditionary Force during the Battle of the Somme and the 3rd Battle of Ypres.
Size: 4 3/4" X 3 1/2" - 12cm x 9 cm.

The Great Exhibition of 1851 was housed in The Crystal Palace which was a cast-iron and glass building originally erected in Hyde Park, London. There were over than 14,000 exhibitors from around the world in the Palace's 990,000 square feet. Designed by Joseph Paxton, the Great Exhibition building was 1,851 feet (564 m) long, with an interior height of 128 feet (39 m). In 1854 after the exhibition, the building was moved to an area of Sydenham in South London, (Later called Crystal Palace) where it stood until 1936 when it was destroyed by fire.

TEMPERANCE PLATE c.1850 THE BOTTLE - PLATE 2. GEORGE CRUIKSHANK. A mid 19th century 8" temperance child’s plate with molded daisy border and a central transfer print based on one of a series of illustrations by George Cruikshank c.1847. The plate is titled "The Bottle - Plate 2" ( 2nd in a series of 8) "He is discharged from his employment for his drunkenness". - "they pawm thier clothes to supply the bottle". Unmarked, but possibly by the Middlesborough Pottery. For similar plates see "Gifts for Good Children 1790-1890", by Noel Riley pages 264-266. In good condition with expected all over light age crazing.
