c.1850 CUP & SAUCER FOR OPENING OF THE BRITANNIA BRIDGE IN WALES.
A rare and unusual cup and saucer for the opening of the Britannia Bridge in 1850 linking The Isle of Anglesey and mainland Wales by rail. Providing a direct link between London and the port of Holyhead for ferries to Ireland. The cup shows the new Britannia bridge built by George Stephenson in front of the 1826 Menai road bridge. The other side of the cup has ladies in Welsh costumes. The saucer has more costumed ladies one has a pig on a leash. There is a small (about 1cm ) firing separation on the lower saucer rim which occurred during manufacture otherwise in excellent condition with clear prints and luster trim. See all photos.
Size: Cup 2 1/4" - 5.5cm tall. Saucer 5" - 13cm across.
